The meaning of the name Silver came from the Old English word describing metal, seolfor. The symbol Ag comes from its latin name argentum. The name may have also orginated from the Greek word argos, mening "shiny" or "white". Silver was discovered in Egypt in about 3400 B.C. by Arcgaeologists. The Bible contains references to Silver. Silver is in the group or "family" 11 (IB) Transition metal. The density is 10.49 grams per cubic centimeter. The hardness is soft. The usual state of mattter for Silver is solid. Silver melts at 961.5C. It boils at 2,000 to 2,200 C. You can melt it and then reshape it and mold it to the the shape you want it. You can contain it in a container as a liquid or solid. It does react slowly with sulfur compounds in the air. It doesn't react readily with water, acids, or many other compounds. Silver also do not burn except when it is in the form of silver powder. About 10% of the silver that is produced in the United States goes to jewelry, coins, and artwork. Another common use of silver would be that silver is used a lot in photography. Electrical equipment is another use for silver. Silver is the most desired element to use for electrical equipment but other elements like copper and alumnium is used because it is less expensive. Silver is a very expensive and vauble element. If we had some silver, we would probably display it is jewelry. It is a very ductile and malleable element which makes it very useful for many thinigs. It is very important in jewelry so it can be shaped into different designs.
